What are Good Morals?

One fine day, you are walking on a footpath, engrossed in your mobile phone, and suddenly you bump into a kid not older than six or seven years old. Before you could apologize, the kid blasts on you and curses you to watch out for where you are going!

How to give your child good moral values

Now imagine this kid to be yours! How would you feel? The first thought crossing your mind would be, " what an insolent kid! He doesn't have any good morals in him!" Your entire morning would be ruined, thinking about that kid who was so rude to you. And then you make a promise to yourself, that I would never allow my child to become so rude.

Now that you have made a promise, how do you plan to stick to it? Do you plan on keeping lessons to teach good morals to your kid, just like lessons for history or English? Will that work? Try this-

Add sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric acid together to give you one molecule of sodium chloride, one molecule of oxygen hydride, and one molecule of carbon monoxide.

Did you get it? No right? Because here only the theoretical part is given, whereas you grasp well with practicals. The above equation is a simple laboratory formula to make salt (Sodium chloride), and water (oxygen hydride).

The same is the case with children. Giving them theoretical lessons about good morals will not help in instilling them in your children, what will be useful is if they see and live with such examples.

Good Morals in kids

Tips to instill good morals in a young kid.

There is no one way for this task as parents have different methods and philosophies when it comes to raising their children. Not to forget, the ever-changing society we live in also plays a major role in imprinting morals-whether good or bad, in your kids.

However, some tips on instilling good morals in your child may include:

Be a role model yourself:

The first and most important thing you can do to help your child develop good morals is to be a role model yourself. Children learn by example, so it’s important to set a good one.

The way you behave with others, the way you portray your emotions, children notice every single thing, and they try to imitate you. It won't be wrong to say that they are a reflection of you, so better be a good one.

Encourage them to think for themselves:

As your child gets older, it’s important to encourage them to think for themselves. Help them to understand that there is not always a “right” or “wrong” answer, but that they need to use their judgment to make decisions.

Also, show them the fine line between thinking for themselves and selfishness. Working hard to win a race is thinking for themselves, but creating hurdles for others to win is selfishness.

How to instill good morals in young kidsTeach them about empathy:

One of the most important moral values you can teach your child is empathy. This is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It’s important to help your child see things from other people’s perspectives and to be aware of how their actions might affect others.

For them to understand empathy, you must show them how to do it. For example, if your child is crying because he wanted a very expensive gift but you couldn't afford it, empathize with him instead of yelling.

" I know you liked the toy, I loved it too. I am sorry I can't get it for you now, can we look for something else?"

Encourage them to be honest:

Honesty is another important moral value that you should encourage in your child. Help them to understand that it’s always better, to tell the truth, even if it’s difficult.

Always appreciate your child when they tell you the truth. Don't yell or hit them when they do something wrong and yet they confess it to you. This will only discourage them from speaking up about the truth.

Teach them about respect:

Respect is one of the good morals that need to be taught from a young age. It’s about showing consideration for others and their feelings. Help your child to understand that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of who they are.

How to teach your kids good mannersEncourage kids to be responsible:

Responsibility is about being accountable for your actions and taking care of yourself and others. Help your child to understand that they need to be responsible for their own choices and actions.

Children usually throw their toys here and there. When one of the toys breaks, show them this is the cause of their action and they are responsible for mending the broken toy.

Encourage your kids to be fair:

Another good moral to teach your child is fairness. It’s about treating others the way you want to be treated. Help your child to understand that everyone deserves to be treated fairly, regardless of who they are.

Show them in actions by treating them the way they treat others. This gives them the feeling of being at the receiving end and helps them change their approach.

Teach them to be caring:

Caring is about being kind and considerate of others. Help your child to understand that they need to care for others, even if those others don’t necessarily care for them.

When your child throws tantrums and drives you to the edge, show him you care for him even when you are angry. With being persistent, your child will surely pick up your habit of caring even when they manage to piss you off.

Ultimately, the best way to instill good morals in your child is through patience, love, and consistency.
